Avelo Airlines announced Tuesday that it would begin serving two new nonstop routes from Lakeland Linder International Airport, to Grand Rapids, Michigan and Long Island, New York, according to a company press release.

The company says it will become the only airline offering nonstop service from Central Florida to the two destinations.

One-way fares will begin at $69, it said.

The services will begin in June with twice-weekly flights.

They will expand Avelo’s current nonstop Lakeland routes from seven to nine.

Last week, Avelo ended its nonstop service to Manchester, New Hampshire, near Boston, after April.

On March 6, it began nonstop service to Nashville.

The flights: Avelo will fly to Grand Rapids via that city’s Gerald R. Ford International Airport beginning June 13, with twice-weekly flights on Fridays and Mondays.

It will fly to Long Island via the Long Island MacArthur Airport, in Ronkonkoma, New York, beginning June 12, with twice-weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays.

In a prepared statement issued by the airline, Lakeland City Manager Shawn Sherrouse said the city is excited to see the additions. “These new routes not only enhance connectivity for our residents but also bring new opportunities for tourism and business, further strengthening Lakeland’s position as a thriving hub for travel in Central Florida.”

In another statement issued by the airline, Visit Central Florida Director Mark Jackson said his organization looks forward to welcoming travelers from both locations to Polk County.

“This area has a long history with both markets, and we’ve been Michigan’s hub for Spring Training for nearly 90 years,” Jackson stated. “Of course, we’ve grown into much more than that — we’re a year-round vacation destination all our own, right here where the real Florida magic happens.”
