Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new Aldi grocery store at 6902 South Florida Ave. | Robert Meyerowitz, LkldNow

Aldi, the Germany-based grocery chain, will open its third Lakeland store in April, a spokesperson for the retailer confirmed Thursday.

The store, at 6902 S. Florida Ave., replaces the Winn-Dixie store at the Imperial Christina Plaza. That Winn-Dixie opened in 1984, the same year as the plaza, and closed in July 2024.

Aldi is currently listing another chunk of the plaza for lease, encompassing 25,140 square feet, as “adjacent tenant space.”

The interior remodeling appeared to be nearing completion on Wednesday.

The Aisle of Shame: Aldi promotes its low prices, achieved by using its  house brands for 90% of its products.

It has its own subreddit packed with Aldi lore. That’s where you’ll find references to what users call Aldi’s Aisle of Shame — the center aisle which often is filled with unusual items (Aldi calls it the Aldi Finds aisle).

Aldi stocks the section with around 100 items every week, usually 50% edible and 50% non-edible.

Aldi says its contents may include “Bat Knit Crazy Cheddar and other Halloween-themed cheeses and decor; luxury jarred candles; pre-mixed mimosas; a range of Advent calendars including cheese, chocolate, toys, beer and premium wine; home furnishings including a recent social media favorite teal cabinet; small kitchen appliances, pet sweaters, cast iron cookware, and yes, even chainsaws.”
