Two new memorial plaques will be added today to the five that are already in place at the Fallen Heroes Memorial at the Lakeland Police Department. They honor Officers Ken Foley and Paul Dunn, who died during the last year. (View News Channel 8 coverage. | Watch video of the event.)

Families of the fallen officers are expected to attend the small, 45-minute ceremony at 5 p.m. It will be live-streamed on the LPD Facebook page for others to watch.

The memorial, dedicated in March 2017, already has plaques for five fallen officers: Patrolman William Barnett, Patrolman Thomas Nicholson, Officer Eugene DeBerry, Officer Carl Cushman, Officer Arnulfo Crispin. 

The main entrance to the LPD headquarters on Massachusetts Avenue will close at 3:45 today and Massachusetts Avenue between Cedar Street and Bay Street will be closed beginning at 4:30 p.m., with detours marked.

Foley, 57, was found dead in his patrol vehicle while on duty on Dec. 4 last year. The death of the 29-year law enforcement officer, was determined to be medical in nature.

Dunn, 50, died Jan. 9 when he hit a concrete median and lost control of his department-issued motorcycle on Lakeland Highlands Road. He had srved with LPD for six years and been in law enforcement for 20 years.

Officer Paul Dunn’s motorcycle was covered with flowers and messages in the week before his funeral last January.
