Lakeland’s 22-year run hosting the Florida high school boys and girls basketball championships has been extended two more years to 2019, the RP Funding Center announced today.

The Florida High School Athletic Association and the venue that was until recently known as The Lakeland Center signed a two-year extension of their contract for the spring tournaments.

“We are thrilled to return to Lakeland as we continue our goal of providing our student-athletes with a quality championship experience,” FHSAA Executive Director George Tomyn said via a news release. “The current renovations and new partnership with the Orlando Magic (to make the center the home of the Lakeland Magic G-League team) make the RP Funding Center an even stronger venue for our basketball state championships.”

According to the news release, the tournament will now run Monday through Saturday. The format will remain the same with four-team single elimination tournaments conducted in each of the nine classifications for both the girls and boy’s events, as well as the Special Olympics Unified Sports State Championships.

Dates for 2018 finals are Feb. 26-March 3 for girls and March 5-1o for boys.

Dates for 2019 finals are Feb. 25-March 2 for girls and March 4-9 for boys.
