KHS: Kathleen High School was awarded a $4.4 million grant to help its efforts to improve performance as a turnaround school. Among other things, the grant will pay for staff training, tuition for faculty pursuing advanced degrees, academic and career counseling and perhaps salary enhancements.

GUN LEGISLATION: Reporters Gary White and John Chambless contacted at least a dozen lawmakers and candidates with Polk ties to get their perspectives on legislation prompted by the Parkland killings. Sen. Kelli Stargel and Rep. Colleen Burton, the two Republican legislators whose districts take in much of Lakeland, generally support current GOP initiatives: an age limit of 21 to buy long guns, a three-day waiting period for gun purchases, mandating at least one armed officer in each school, but no bans on specific weapons.
