SCHOOLS: State education officials turned down a “turnaround” plan for Kathleen Middle School and four others in Polk, asking to see a revised plan that includes more investment in order to keep the schools open.

PHILANTHROPY: The Harvey T. Hall Jr. Fund at the GiveWell Community Foundation issued grants totaling $1.2 million to Central Florida Speech and Hearing, Florida Southern College, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, Peace River Center and Polk State College Foundation.
