- SCHOOLS: The state of Florida’s announcement that schools must reopen in August and offer five-day instruction brought criticism from local parents, teachers and some School Board members.
- MASKS: Polk County commissioners passed a resolution encouraging residents to wear masks to stop the spread of the coronavirus but did not join other area jurisdictions, including Lakeland, in mandating them.
- PRISONERS: COVID-19 has been detected in 180 inmates at Polk Correction Institution in Polk City; the facility houses 1,100-plus men, most of them near the end of their sentences.
- PPP: More than 4,000 Polk businesses benefited from the federal Paycheck Protection Program. On average, Polk businesses received $14,184 in the forgivable loans, well below the national average.
