Read It in the Morning Paper: Capitol Arrest, United Way

  • CAPITOL ARREST: Joshua Christopher Doolin, 23, of Lakeland, was charged Wednesday with crimes related to the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. Hired in May as a Polk EMT, he was fired after his arrest.
  • UNITED WAY of Central Florida reported record pledges of $23.8 million for 2020-21, with $12.8 million of that coming via federal CARES Act relief. The agency served roughly 350,000 people in Polk, Highlands and Hardee Counties.
  • REP. SCOTT FRANKLIN joined most fellow Republicans in voting against removing Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol. The bill, which passed, breaches the federalist tradition of letting states choose their own statues, he said.
