• TEACHERS: The Polk school district’s implementation of Gov. DeSantis’ back-to-school order is overwhelming teachers and other school employees with double the work while coping with the pandemic.
  • UNEMPLOYMENT in Polk in August dropped to 9.3% from July’s 13.2% but more than double the 4% from 12 months ago. Polk was tied for third highest in Florida after tourism-dependent Osceola and Orange counties.
  • CORONAVIRUS in Polk: New cases over the last week averaged 94 per day. The rate of COVID-19 tests coming back positive has increased slightly the last two days with readings above 7% compared with an average of 4.9% the previous seven days. Polk schools report 148 cases at 66 of the 150 campuses.
