- SCOTT FRANKLIN received a 5-minute-plus congratulatory phone call from President Trump the evening after the Lakeland city commissioner defeated incumbent Ross Spano in the GOP primary for Congress. While Franklin supplied 52.7% of the nearly $590,000 contributed toward his primary campaign, he is seeking to broaden his donor base in the general election battle against Democrat Alan Cohn.
- REPUBLICANS in Polk County are broadening their voter registration lead over Democrats, due in part to a GOP campaign to encourage party switching and the fact that more former Democrats than former Republicans have changed to no party affiliation.
