- POLK SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT Jacqueline Byrd, 53, affirmed her decision to retire in February. Political rumblings had suggested she might reverse her decision if Billy Townsend lost re-election, as happened two weeks ago.

- FIVE NURSING HOMES in Polk report recent double-digit increases in COVID-19 cases. In Lakeland: Wedgewood Healthcare Center reported 22 cases among residents in the last 10 days; Grace Manor Suites acknowledged 11 (seven residents, four staff) in the last week; Grand Villa of Lakeland acknowledged 17 (six residents, 11 staff) in the last week.
