• JACQUELINE BYRD, 53, announced she would retire in February 2021 from her position as superintendent of Polk public schools. In a letter to School Board members, she criticized “disharmony” caused by “some board members” who “blur the respective roles and responsibilities of the School Board (policy and budget) and Superintendent (operations).”
  • COVID-19 TESTING will increase among first responders and other county and municipal employees in Polk, thanks to a $2 million allocation from Polk County’s $126 million federal Cares Act grant. In addition, the Florida Department of Health plans to increase testing in Polk from 450 a day to 500 a day, County Manager Bill told commissioners.
