CANDIDATES: Add towing business owner Ricky Shirah to the list of candidates hoping to replace departing City Commissioner Justin Troller. As we reported earlier, the other three who have submitted papers for the position are retired hospital executive Carole Philipson, entrepreneur Pablo Sologaistoa and educator Shandale Terrell. So far, incumbents Bill Read and Phillip Walker have received no opponents for the November election.
FREEDOM RIDERS: Two Freedom Riders and a USF history professor will discuss the role of the students who risked their lives to challenge legal segregation in the South in the 1960s during a panel discussion at the Polk Museum of Art Wednesday at 6. Their talks and the screening of a PBS documentary mark a museum exhibit by artist Charles Edward Williams inspired by the Freedom Riders.
