PRE-DIVERSION: The Lakeland Police Department will implement a State Attorney’s Office program that will give officers the option to cite some first-time misdemeanor offenders and send them to a pre-arrest diversion program instead of jail. Officers will have discretion who to cite, and offenders must acknowledge they committed the crime. Those who complete the course will not go to jail or be listed on court dockets.

GARDEN DISTRICT: Monday the City Commission will vote on an ordinance that would raise the maximum height for buildings in the historic portion of the Garden District to 60 feet. The ordinance would give the city’s Historic Preservation Board oversight on all new construction in the district while developers would follow Lakeland Downtown Development Authority building standards.
