TEACHER ARRESTED: Winter Haven elementary teacher Tasha Fisher of Lakeland was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence while driving northbound in the southbound lane on South Florida Avenue near Christina Boulevard. She told officers she had taken three Ambien instead of her prescribed one.

CITY HALL: City staff believe some major complaints about permitting and code enforcement are being addressed with new procedures. Community and Economic Development Director Nicole Travis credits the turnaround to listening to area business owners, developers, building consultants, and engineers. One major change in priorities has helped many get simple permits in less than 30 minutes. “We’re becoming problem solvers,” Travis said. “A lot of that is communication, and we’ve really been working on that.”

DIVERSION: On Friday, the City Commission will discuss a new pre-arrest diversion program proposed by the State Attorney’s Office (SAO). The program would give police officers the option to issue a citation and direct offenders into an educational program only available for nonviolent, first-time offenders who have not previously gone through the program.
