SHOOTING AT SALEM’S: NAACP officials met with Lakeland Police Chief Larry Giddens to discuss the shooting death of Michael Jerome Taylor Wednesday at Salem’s Gyros & More on Memorial Boulevard. LPD spokesman Gary Gross stated that three investigations will be conducted. The criminal investigation and an administrative investigation to determine if any policies were broken will be conducted by the Lakeland Police Department. The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation.

BIRD COUNT FALLS: Lakeland and Lake Wales National Audubon Society annual bird counts were held in December. Cole Fredericks, who helps coordinate the counts, said the tallies were low for some species that reside only in a particular ecosystems. Fredricks said that “scrubby areas are gone, and open fields are becoming less and less.”
