CITY BUDGET: City commissioners tried multiple ways to reach consensus on cutting the property tax rate Thursday night, but came up short each time. For now, they’re heading into the final budget hearing (6 p.m. Sept. 20 at City Hall) with millage set at the current rate of $5.56 for every $1,000 of taxable property value. The tentative budget approved Thursday increases the general fund from $127M to $129M but reduces the total budget from $695M to $612M.

TAPATIO’S: The two brothers who own the original Tapatio’s Restaurant at 734 E. Memorial Boulevard are planning a $500,000 update to the building that will add 40 seats and a waiting area up front. The restaurant will remain open as renovations proceed. Not mentioned: The restaurant has been approved for up to $340,000 in construction grants from the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Authority | Meeting minutes
