LAKE MORTON PLAZA: After a rooftop fire Wednesday forced evacuation of the 10-story retirement tower at Florida and Lime, crews are blowing out smoke-tinged air and repairing water-damaged apartments on the top floor. It’s too early to tell when the 128 residents will be allowed to return. (“We were well taken care of,” a resident told Bay News 9.) The expansive article by Kimberly C. Moore also looks at why it took 90 minutes to evacuate the building, the building’s fire-inspection history and notes calls from two families upset they weren’t notified their relative was being moved.
SCHOOL GRADES: School administrators are celebrating news that the Polk school district’s grade rose from a C to a B this year and that four of six “turn-around” schools — including Kathleen Middle — performed well enough to stay under direct district control. The other two schools failed to reach a C grade — one of them is Griffin Elementary — and will now be managed by Kentucky-based Educational Directions.
