The Florida Department of Health in Polk has shut down its online registration portal as its emphasis on Covid vaccines shifts to walk-up shots instead of appointments. The Polk phone center (863-519-7911 ) will operate until Friday, News Channel 8 reports.

Visitors to the Polk portal are referred to a state database of vaccine sites, which lists 26 in Lakeland, most of them at CVS, Publix and Walmart pharmacies.

The Polk health department will focus its efforts on larger vaccinations pods where appointments will not be needed. The next one takes place Tuesday in Haines City at Lake Eva Event Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Those still wanting appointments can contact Lakeland Regional Health online or at 863-904-1895.

Meanwhile, Publix has announced that its online registration system for the Moderna vaccine is now open at all times, not just on specific days of the week.
