Masks remain optional in Polk public schools. Polk School Board members heard passionate debate from both sides of the mask debate on Tuesday, but did not vote on the issue. Vice Chair Kay Fields tried to make a motion for an emergency mask mandate, but Chair Lori Cunningham ended the meeting without calling for a second, The Ledger reported. Earlier in the meeting, Superintendent Frederick Heid said a new COVID-19 dashboard with real-time data is coming to the school district’s web site; the current dashboard has been criticized for lags in updating data.

  1. Why are they trying to kill the people they are supposed to serve and protect?! SO glad I got out of this city/state and school system before they tried to kill me and my kids! Thank you Buncombe County, NC for being sane.

  2. For shame. Other school boards in this state are taking a brave stand against DeSantis’ threats; why won’t Polk? Some board members claim that masks have not been proven effective; that is, of course, ridiculous. Thank you, Kay Fields, for trying. To the rest of the board: you are failing the children and staff of this district. Shame on you.
