A 78-year-old Lakeland woman walking along Carter Road was hit by a car and died as she crossed the road near the entrance to Eaglebrooke, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported today.
Anne McMillian of 7020 S. Carter Road was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries Tuesday night, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

McMillian was walking along the shoulder of the southbound lane around 6:15 p.m., and “it appears she was running to cross the road and was struck in the northbound lane,” spokeswoman Carrie Horstman said in an e-mail.

Angie Register of Lakeland, driving her black Ford Expedition northbound, tried to avoid hitting McMillian, but was unable to do so, the spokeswoman said. She stopped and tried to help after the accident.

South Carter Road was closed for about two hours Tuesday evening. “There is no indication of impairment for either party involved,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
