Heaven gained a kind, funny guy Saturday morning when Mike McCormick got to meet his Savior and be reunited with family, friends, and fellow believers. We are certain that he has already shared many stories to bring his mom, grandparents, and his Uncle David up to speed.

He was a great son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, husband, father, son-in-law, and uncle. It was his absolute delight to be called “Grandpa Mike”. He loved his work family at Aercon Florida, his church families over the years, and our Lakeland neighbors have also become family to us. Mike was even drawn to strangers … especially if he saw a Masters logo on a hat or shirt. He was always ready to share a smile, a word of encouragement, or a story of a recent travel adventure, or a memory from high school basketball days. He was an avid golfer and a diligent student of the Masters.

Mike graduated from York High School in 1974 (York, SC). He attended North Greenville College (Tigerville, SC). As a young man, Mike worked as an assistant in Senator Strom Thurmond’s office in Washington, D.C. He also worked at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, SC. Mike spent the last 26 years of his career in construction sales. He most recently served as the General Manager at Aercon Florida in Haines City.

The family is deeply grateful for the many prayers and kindnesses shown to us since Mike’s cancer diagnosis (glioblastoma) in October of 2021. Mike is survived by his wife, Pennye; his sons: Tyler of Mulberry, FL (Kayla, Clayton, CJ, Cammie), and Ben of Ocala, FL (wife, Kirstyn; Tate, Asher, and baby due September 1); his dad: Lee McCormick of Laurens, SC (wife, Gail); his brothers: Steve of Sunset, SC (wife, Patti), and Tim of Chesnee, SC. He adored his aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews as well as his cousins, and a very special uncle, Keith. Mike always said he won the “in-law lottery” with Pennye’s parents, PeeWee and Betty Padgett (Edgefield, SC), and he had a fun sibling relationship with Pennye’s sister, Linda (Edgefield, SC).

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 20, at 10:30 a.m. The address is 301 North Florida Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33801. Parking is behind the church as well as surrounding lots owned by various businesses. Attire suggestion: business casual. (Guys, feel free to wear a golf/polo shirt. Mike would LOVE that! No pressure to wear a tie and especially not a jacket in the summer heat.)

The service will be live-streamed on YouTube. Search “Trinity Lakeland” to reach the site. Condolences may be sent to the family at Heath Funeral Chapel.
