John Frinzi

Brian Goding is stepping up the live music at his cozy Hillcrest Coffee in Dixieland. Tonight’s 6:30 p.m. lineup features the Margaritaville vibes of John Frinzi, a nationally touring singer-songwriter based in Lakeland, and the guitar virtuosity of Carlton Music’s Joe Gavin as well as Hillcrest’s Hannah Dobson

Hillcrest has started offering music at noon on Fridays, with a residency of singer-guitarist-storyteller Jon Corneal, an Auburndale resident and Gram Parsons collaborator thought to be the first country-rock drummer.

Just like three weeks ago, Thursday night presents music fans with multiple interesting choices. Raney Wade is playing at Fresco’s; I was taken by her singing and piano playing at last summer’s Polk Theatre Elvis tribute. Piano man Dan Signor is joined by fiddler Kelly Halloran at The Pink Piano.

Also downtown tonight, two jazz pianists play a few doors apart: Evan Evan Eliason at Lakeland Loft and Ralph Sluyter at Posto 9. Both teach at Piano Alley.

And all of the above (other than Corneal) are on a Thursday night. There’s a lot of other performances worth checking this weekend, including an Eagles tribute band after the Flying Tigers game Friday and The Jazz Phools, who recreate ’20s and ’30s jazz, at Lakeland Loft Saturday night.
