Outages at Lakeland Electric’s McIntosh Unit 3 coal-fired power plant — it’s been offline 115 of 145 days over the summer — have led to challenges in managing the 230,000 tons of coal stockpiled on utility property, The Ledger reported. General Manager Joel Ivy told the city Utility Committee that his staff is aware of the need to be prudent in repairs on the unit and managing coal supplies until the plant’s decommissioning, planned for 2024.
