Lakeland Electric has received the first of two local approvals needed to shut its coal-burning McIntosh 3 power plant this spring. The city Utility Committee endorsed the closing after utility officials said closing the plant three years ahead of schedule will save $13.1 million. City commissioners are expected to give their OK Jan. 19.
