A mutli-vehicle accident with at least one fatality has backed up traffic in both directions on Interstate 4 near the Socrum Loop Road exit, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. UPDATE: All traffic lanes were opened by 3:45 p.m. today.

One lane of westbound traffic was open at 11:30 a.m., with Google Maps then showing congestion nearly to Florida Polytechnic University.

Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed a fatality, and the Lakeland Fire Department said up to five vehicles are involved.

Firefighters were on the scene extricating victims, the Fire Department said.

In addition to the Fire Department and Highway Patrol, first responders from the Lakeland Police Department and Polk EMS were on the scene.
