Drivers entering South Florida Avenue from South Lakeland Drive or Lake Harris Drive would no longer be able to turn left or go straight across the intersection, under changes being planned by the Florida Department of Transportation.

A public meeting is planned for Tuesday to take comments on the proposed changes to the intersection, where Outback Steakhouse is on the west side of Florida Avenue and Red Elephant Pizza is to the east.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of the Highlands, 1010 Lake Miriam Drive, and includes a presentation about the changes as well as time for public comments, according to a DOT notice.

Drivers on South Florida Avenue will still be able to turn left onto both South Lakeland Drive and Lake Harris Drive, the notice said.

The proposal to change the median to a “dual-directional opening” is intended to improve safety, the DOT said.
