Power Plant Suffers Another Setback; Repair Could Cost $4 Million

About two weeks after Lakeland Electric’s natural-gas-burning McIntosh 5 plant went back online, the failure of an oil pump and its backup damaged large steel bearings and idled the generator again. Repairs are estimated to cost $3.4 million to $4 million. Source: The Ledger

‘Executive Mayor’ Promoters Submit Petitions

Committee for a Strong Lakeland wheeled 34 boxes into the Polk Supervisor of Election’s Office today. Inside were 6,789 petitions the group collected asking for a special election to decide whether Lakeland will change its form of government to one where an elected mayor runs the city administration instead of a hired city manager.

City Proceeds With Downtown Parking Garage Study

Before city commissioners approved a $75,000 study by Kimley Horn and Associates, Commissioner Jim Malless questioned whether two of four sites are still candidates since they changed hands in November.
