Before city commissioners approved a $75,000 study by Kimley Horn and Associates, Commissioner Jim Malless questioned whether two of four sites are still candidates since they changed hands in November. Commissioner Justin Troller contended the study is for show since minds have been made up to build a new garage near the Lakeland Police Department headquarters.
The two-term city commissioner confirmed he won’t seek a third term. Lakelanders can expect at least three new new city commissioners next year, since Mayor Howard Wiggs and Commissioner Edie Yates will be ineligible to run again this fall.
Medical marijuana dispensaries will not be allowed in Lakeland until at least April to give city officials time to draft and approve land-use rules for the facilities, city commissioners decided today in a 6-0 vote. More
Justin Troller is on administrative leave from his position as athletic director at Lakeland High School. He remains a member of the Lakeland City Commission. Several sources told The Ledger Troller is being investigated for a relationship with a minor, but neither Sheriff Judd nor LPD Chief Giddens would confirm it.
LHS teacher Laura Williamson has also been placed on administrative leave, News Channel 8 reports.
That was fast. This morning, City Commissioner Don Selvage asked a transportation planner about criticism that recent changes to Massachusetts Avenue downtown have confused drivers. The 1,000 or so people with reservations to dine at Posto 9 during its first five days will have to wait a bit longer to experience the Brazilian gastropub overlooking Munn Park. The group pushing for an “executive mayor” for Lakeland said efforts at polling places helped them add nearly enough signatures to get the issue on an upcoming city ballot. (Were they at all the voting locations? Nobody from the group approached me at Precinct 222.)
